Worthwhile information for school systems and the public

Posted by Brent Meier on Aug 28 2009 | General

Thanks to Angel for this link to the National Women’s Law Center. I’ve been skimming some of their reports and the cause about which they are informing the public is the alarming drop-out rate of Latinas, despite their life goals and dreams. Stuff gets in the way. This Law Center strives to educate school systems on how to more effectively provide their service to our at-risk youth. Please read!

Getting a Read

Posted by Brent Meier on Aug 18 2009 | General

Hello! Things are moving along here—we had a good time last week at our summer acampamento; making art, playing outside, even visiting the zoo. Now we are cooking up the next batch of family literacy projects and excited to have so much support from Lincoln Public Schools, Lincoln Literacy Council, and Lincoln City Libraries. Our dream team looks to focus on groups of families in both Everett and West Lincoln schools to cultivate a shared interest in theirs and their children’s education.

In other news, less than two weeks until Festival de las Américas, a cultural event for which we are very excited and will feature food, music, and dance from numerous Latin American countries. And better yet, it’s at the Nebraska State Fair, so everyone can enjoy Lincoln’s final hosting of this annual Slice of the Good Life with a side of salsa.

For now, you’ll just have to enjoy these fotos del acampamento:

Thanks to all who helped!

Stop by El Centro for your Festival tickets!

Back at it

Posted by Brent Meier on Aug 05 2009 | General

Here I am. The big comeback from nearly a month in Cuba has left me groggy at work and with an odd sense of place. But I’m eyeballing my stack of materials and preparing for a new heat of programs. On my plate are fresh installments of literacy projects,  round two of the minority health initiative, plus a documentary on Latino educational programming. Make sure to attend Lincoln’s final hosting of the State Fair—we’ve got a big event planned.  Sobretodo, August and September look robust and will surely cap off the lovely summer we’ve been enjoying.

Keep readin!
