New Season

Posted by Brent Meier on Oct 01 2009 | General

We are gearing up for the newest installments of family literacy projects, a part of our service that’s quickly becoming a defining aspect of our agency. We have recruited ten families from Everett and even more from West Lincoln Elementary to receive a number of instructional programs:  for adults we have English and basic computation,  for kids aged 3-6 we have a reading program, and for kids 7-12 another reading program given by an education PhD student from UNL.

This program continues to improve yearly, and this year we are especially indebted to Lincoln Literacy Council for teaming up and providing assistance in nearly every programming aspect from top to bottom. With the cooperation of LPS and the involvement of UNL this has become una colaboración muy bonita. The first days kick off next Tuesday here at El Centro and Thursday at West Lincoln.

Read In

Posted by Brent Meier on Oct 01 2009 | General

Last week marked the third annual Hispanic Heritage Month Read In, sponsored by Lincoln City Libraries and hosted at Bennett Martin. We had a lovely time in the pastoral courtyard—Bennett’s best kept secret— and reading poems from Latin America and taking in a visceral performance by poet Dominic Garay with accompanist Oscar Rios. Thanks again, Libraries! The Read In gets better every year. Check it out on Channel 5…they taped it!

Here’s the Read List:

Celestial written and performed by Dominic Garay

En Paz by Amado Nervo, read by Marissa Torio

Diario de Bucaramanga (excerpt) by Louis Peru de Lacroix, read by Olga Soto

Ultimas Golondrinas by Mario Benedetti, read by Angel Freytez

Sparrow’s Book (excerpt) by Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, read by Marien Ruiz

Tus Ojos by Luis Alberto Ambroggio, read by Ana Martinez

MASA by Cesar Vallejo, read by Elia Sanchez

Thank you to all who participated.
