THE TIME THAT REMAINS is a humorous, heartbreaking film composed of elegantly stylized autobiographical episodes from the life of writer/director Elia Suleiman. The film explores life among the Israeli Arab community, and is shot largely in homes and places in which Suleiman’s family once lived. Inspired by his father’s diaries, letters his mother sent to family members who had fled the Israeli occupation, and the director’s own recollections, the film spans from 1948 until the present, recounting the saga of the filmmaker’s family in subtly hilarious vignettes. Inserting himself as a silent observer reminiscent of Buster Keaton, Suleiman trains a keen eye on the absurdities of life in Nazareth.

People have different perceptions about immigration matters, some think that America should welcome them because this is a country built by immigrants, some have a different opinion.

Nebraska Lawmakers have introduced four bills in the Legislature to place restrictions on immigrants. If you’re interested in finding out more information about current immigration issues like this one, Nómada is a new radio program that will explore these topics in Nebraska through interviews, analysis and debate.

CLASES DE INGLÉS: Arrancaron de nuevo nuestras clases de inglés el jueves pasado, y hoy mismo se deleita en anunciar que vamos a abrir una segunda clase de inglés básico, debido a la alta participación la semana pasada!  Cada jueves, de 6:00-8:00 pm se reúnen las clases, dos del nivel básico, y una del intermedio.

CLASES DE COMPUTACIÓN: Las clases de computación empezaron el lunes pasado (24 de enero), y van a seguir reuniéndose en el Clyde Malone Center (justo al lado del Centro de las Américas) cada lunes siguiente desde las 6:oo pm hasta las 8:00 pm, hasta su último día de clases, el 14 de marzo.  El costo para cada clase es $25.00.

GOLDEN WARRIORS PROGRAM:

Nuestro exitoso programa golden warriors, bajo la guía de Erick Saavedra, se junta cada viernes aquí mismo en El Centro de las Américas, de 6 a 9 de la tarde.  Erick tiene su programa tambiénen North Star High School los miércoles, de 3 a 4:30pm ¡y ya pronto vamos a celebrar el estreno de Golden Warriors en Irving Middle School!  Este programa se encuentra abierto a la participación de cualquier joven entre las edades de 10 a 18, entonces que vengan todos los que estén interesados.  Puede llamarle a Erick aquí en El Centro al 474-3950.

Preparación gratis de los Impuestos:  para todas aquellas personas que necesitan ayuda con los impuestos ¡¡no pierdan su oportunidad para prepararse los impuestos!!  vamos a dejar nuestras puertas abiertas para la preparación de sus impuestos cada martes hasta el 12 de abril, de 5 a 7 de la tarde, pero ojo, que lleguen puntualmente, que hay cupo limitado, y que traigan todos los documentos necesarios para tramitar los impuestos.  Por ejemplo:

Si ud. ya tiene un número de seguro social, necesitamos una copia de cada w-2 recibido del año 2010, y cualquier otro documento que conste algún otro ingreso anual.

Para aquellas personas que no tienen seguro social, van a tener que tramitar para un número ITIN, para poder declarar sus impuestos federales (o para reclamar a cualquier dependiente que no tenga seguro social).  Para cada aplicación se exige o pasaporte o dos otras formas de identificación (acto de nacimiento, licencia de conducir, identificación de su país natal, etc.).

Las puertas se abrirán puntualmente a las 5 (ni antes, ni después de las cinco), y si ud. no tiene todos los documentos necesarios, no podrá seguir con el trámite de los impuestos.  ¡Les agradecemos mucho su cooperación!

Les invitamos hoy, a las 6 de la tarde en el Clyde Malone Center (justo al lado del Centro de las Américas), a una plática de los taxes, para hablar de cómo hacerse los impuestos, y cómo sacar la mayor cantidad de devuelta posible para el año 2010.  Vamos a aclarar un poquito este proceso de llenarse los taxes, lo cual es aveces confuso.

Así que para todo el mundo que se ha quedado trabado o confundido en cualquier aspecto de los impuestos, o para aquellas personas que nunca han tenido que entregar un 1040, que pasen por el Clyde Malone Center hoy mismo para participar en esta charla de impuestos, a las 6 de la tarde.

The documentary will be shown at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, located in the heart of Lincoln’s downtown, bordering the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s campus.   There will be no entrance fee (free of charge) and the film will last shortly over an hour.  On street parking is limited, but downtown provides several parking garages located within walking distance of the theater.  Come out on this beautiful fall evening, take a stroll through Lincoln’s crisp and fallen leaves, and further your cultural and educational insight as to what really is happening  in this small town Nebraska school.  Afterward, meet the individuals featured in the film and hear their personal epilogues, as they too will be present for this touching premier.

Erick Saavedra will be kicking off another 12 week session of our Golden Warriors Program, designed to help young Latino men ages 14 to 18 develop into confident, competent, and aspiring individuals.  The first session will begin Friday, October 15th, from 6-8pm.

Also, we will be beginning English and Spanish classes as well!

• The Spanish class will meet once a week on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30.
• Basic English classes will be taught starting October 14th, and will meet every consecutive Thursday from 6-8pm.
• Intermediate English classes will begin meeting October 19th, and will adjourn each consecutive Tuesday from 6-8pm.  Both English classes are free of charge, provided that the student purchases his/her own book from El Centro, at $25.00.

Back in 2008 the down economy had me squeaking by, dabbling in some graphic design stuff and just hanging out. I had heard about AmeriCorps back in the day but mostly had forgotten about it. The grapevine informed me there were some positions available, one at a certain “El Centro de las Américas”. Here I am nearly two years later, rocking the Education and Technology Program Coordinator position. And guess what? The turnover for our current AmeriCorps volunteers is September, so tell your bilingual friends that there will be one full-time position and two part-time positions opening up and they should apply with Deb Buckman over at the F Street Community Center. You can go as far as the ganas take you.
